Ray Beckwith

Ray Beckwith

Dr Ray Beckwith OAM, is the oldest and most famous surviving employee of the golden era of Penfolds in Nuriootpa. Ray started working with Penfolds on January 2, 1935 (on the current Beckwith Park site) and became the first person to adjust or control pH to control bacterial spoilage in wine in Australia, if not the world.

Ray's most famous contribution was as the chemist who supported Max Schubert in the creation of Australia's most famous red wine, Grange. Ray retired from Penfolds in 1973 and he continues to live in Nuriootpa.

As Australia's most famous living wine chemist and one of the Barossa's proud sons, it is fitting that Ray's life on this very site is commemorated. The Beckwith name is synonymous with innovation, excellence and leadership in the wine industry; key messages that reflect the ethos of this project.
